Job Description:
The Legal Assistant/Paralegal:
the services shall include, but not limited to the following:
Providing a variety of direct legal support services to serviced AUSA staff.
Typical assignments include:
(a) Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format.
Obtaining needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources, and submitting completed legal documents to the appropriate AUSA or, in limited cases, directly to the court.
In preparation of documents, considering the nature and the status of the case involved.
With limited instructions from the AUSA, gathering, preparing, summarizing relevant materials for use by AUSA, in preparation of opinions, briefs and other legal documents; summarizing depositions and other transcripts, maintaining case files, performing simple legal research, indexing, tracking and controlling exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trials.
Completing variable aspects of recurring legal documents in conformance with the rules governing their style and format.
(b) Receiving and analyzing incoming pleadings and correspondence.
Determining appropriate action and noting time limitations for responses.
(c) Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as independently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists.
(d) Coordinating with the victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to current Departmental guidelines relating to victims' rights and services responsibilities.
Notifying appropriate individuals of victim/witness issues.
(e) Providing assistance to attorneys in the courtroom, preparing exhibits cross references.
Screening documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
(f) Compiling documents for FOIA or production request, subject to review by superiors and trial staff.
(g) Receiving visitors and telephone callers, faxing information.
Furnishing requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions and general procedures of the office.
(h) Establishing and maintaining a variety of files.
Searching legal reference files for information needed by AUSAs in conducting interviews and preparing correspondence.
Assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents from file material.
(i) Separating, screening, selecting, assembling, and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository in accordance with established procedures.
(j) Performing docketing duties such as opening, updating and closing cases through use of the automated case tracking system.
As necessary, searching database for required information.
(k) Performing routine document center support function such as photocopying, bate stamping, packing boxes and preparing them for shipment and delivering items.
(l) Preparing documents for imaging/scanning and maintains inventory/control records.

Producing a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications.
For example, assignments may include integrating output from different software types, e.
g.
, tables produced bydatabase applications and charts and graphs produced by electronic spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desk top publishing text.
Products include complicated tables, graphs and charts which may be incorporated into legal documents or courtroom presentations.
Ensuring proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

Providing automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations.
Utilizing various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters.
Preparing documents, charts, and visual materials for use in trials.
Providing technical support e.
g.
, enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits.
The Legal Assistant/Paralegal shall have a working understanding, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties as specified herein.
The Legal Assistant/Paralegal shallbe proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (i.
e.
, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook) and WordPerfect Office Suite.
The Legal Assistant/Paralegal will have knowledge of legal terminologyand be proficient in the use of applicable automation support hardware and software to automate various legal and office support functions and to perform data retrieval from various legal andadministrative subject matter databases.
The Legal Assistant/Paralegal shall work in an office setting; some walking, standing, bending and carrying of small office items is required.
Position Requirements The contract Legal Assistant/Paralegal will be required to pass a Minimum Background Investigation prior to starting work onsite.
This process will include a background check, credit history checkand a drug screening.
The successful vendor is expected to screen out applicants who cannot pass these screenings.
The USAO will provide the necessary security forms and instructions to the successful proposed contractor and will process them.
